Marla Custom Blinds (Torbay) Delights Conservatory Customers

Conservatory woodweave blinds for a sunroom in Totnes.

When it comes to conservatory blinds and shades, it’s a fact that no two conservatories are the same.

Each poses unique challenges. So, when Andrew Benson of Marla Custom Blinds (Torbay) visited Manor Farm in Totnes, South Devon to survey for conservatory roof blinds, he was open to all possibilities.

As soon as the customer showed him into the sunroom attached to their stone-built listed property, Andrew knew that this was going to be a challenge. Undaunted, he sat down with the customer and began to uncover what they wanted.

The customers’ shopping list included…

  • Blind material that reduced heat and glare while still allowing some light through even when closed
  • A colour and texture that was in keeping with the character of their traditional property
  • Fixings and detailing that were also in character.

Andrew assured the clients that all their requirements were within his capabilities and showed them our extensive range of materials and trims. They chose Marla’s classic woodweave conservatory roof blinds in antique white with conrastng stone-coloured tape and traditional brass eyelets.  Andrew proceeded to measure up and take photographs of the unusually shaped roof then returned to his office to prepare the design and quote.

His design had to take into account several challenges. The different sized roof spars would require the use of handmade fixings and the pointed shape of the roof would mean that that the top fixings had to all end at the same point.

There was one final challenge to be overcome. The maximum drop for these woodweave blinds was 3 metres (due to the weight of the material), but the two central roof sections were 4 metres long.
To solve this problem, Andrew specified two separate blinds which met at the same point in each roof panel to create a continuous line around the whole conservatory, when viewed from the ground.

All in all, the final design called for 15 individual handmade woodweave blinds, handmade inside fixings and a traditional brass end hook pole to complete the look.

When the blinds were installed a few weeks later, they fitted perfectly, and the customer told Andrew that his solution and the finished result had exceeded their expectations.

We’ll leave the last words to the customer.
Andrew’s work for Marla Custom Blinds was outstanding. We had Wood Weave blinds fitted in a very demanding sunroom, and his attention to detail and reliability was fantastic. We have no hesitation in recommending him.
